Coinbase is actively integrating artificial intelligence into its software development processes. CEO Brian Armstrong announced that more than 40% of the company's code is now generated by AI, with the expectation that this figure will reach 50% within a month.
Current State of AI Implementation
Armstrong noted on his X page that "obviously, AI-generated code needs to be reviewed and understood, and not all areas of the business can use it. But we should be using it responsibly as much as we possibly can." He also shared a chart showing that the percentage of AI-generated code at Coinbase has more than doubled since April.
Changes in Engineering Culture
Armstrong has urged engineers to utilize tools such as Copilot, Claude Code, and Cursor. This new approach has allowed engineers to refactor, upgrade, and create new codebases in days, instead of months. In a recent podcast, he mentioned terminating employees who could not provide valid reasons for resisting AI.
Coinbase's Workforce Expansion
Despite caution in the crypto industry, Coinbase is actively seeking new staff. Currently, around 350 job openings are listed on the company's website, with nearly half being engineering-related. Customer experience roles represent the largest share of non-technical positions.
Thus, Coinbase's strategy for AI integration aims to streamline operations and enhance productivity, which the company believes will create a significant competitive advantage.
