El Salvador has officially paused its daily Bitcoin acquisition plan as of February 2025, while also acquiring gold worth $207 million.
Pause in Bitcoin Purchases
The government of El Salvador has suspended its daily Bitcoin accumulation strategy that began in late 2021. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) confirmed in its July 2025 review that no new state-backed Bitcoin purchases have occurred since February this year.
Gold Acquisition in National Reserves
According to the Central Reserve Bank of El Salvador (BCR), the country acquired 13,999 troy ounces of gold valued at approximately $207.4 million. This raises its total gold reserves from 44,106 to 58,105 troy ounces. This purchase marks the first precious metals acquisition in over three decades.
Uncertainty in Bitcoin Strategy
The country's Bitcoin wallets continue to show daily transfers of 1 BTC, but these are now categorized as internal transfers rather than new market buys. President Bukele has not made any new statements regarding the status or future of the Bitcoin accumulation plan. Currently, the focus appears to be shifting to gold as part of reserve diversification.
El Salvador faces challenges with its Bitcoin strategy, while the new acquisition of gold significantly alters the approach to managing the country's reserves.
