The Lamina1 blockchain protocol, developed by Neal Stephenson, has announced a partnership with the special effects studio Wētā Workshop to create a new project called 'Artefact'.
Project Main Details
The 'Artefact' project aims to establish a framework for intellectual property (IP) development and collective world-building. Neal Stephenson and the Wētā team plan to engage with creator communities through the Lamina1 protocol, inviting them to uncover the stories behind each 'Artefact.' This will build on themes and plots from Stephenson’s previous works. Stephenson noted that the project will be not just a new virtual world, but an infrastructure that allows the creation of worlds.
Diving into Worlds
Lamina1 CEO Rebecca Barkin defined the metaverse within the context of the project. Barkin explained that the metaverse is an always-on virtual environment where people gather and engage in various nonlinear and linear stories and experiences, without requiring a headset. Barkin also emphasized that their team is creating 'narrative scaffolding' and interacting with the audience through interactive elements while protecting user data and output.
Metaverse: A Different Way
In a previous interview with Cointelegraph, Neal Stephenson mentioned that the metaverse is happening differently from how he visualized it in his 1992 novel 'Snow Crash.' Nevertheless, technologies such as affordable and high-quality three-dimensional graphics allow the creation of new types of metaverses, different from his original ideas.
The 'Artefact' project is a significant step in the development of virtual worlds and intellectual property. The collaboration between Lamina1 and Wētā Workshop opens new opportunities for creators and users, providing them with a platform to explore and develop unique digital worlds.
