Ripple has announced plans to boost the programmability of XRP Ledger, including introducing smart contracts and improving infrastructure.
New Capabilities for XRP Ledger
Ripple has announced that it plans to introduce smart contracts to XRP Ledger as soon as next year. For now, this functionality remains in the research phase.
XRPL Hooks and EVM Sidechain
XRPL Hooks, which have passed a third-party security audit, will serve as the foundation for introducing smart contracts on the mainnet. Ripple is focusing on ensuring permissionless, easy learning and customization while also minimizing the impact to performance and cost of infrastructure. The EVM sidechain, announced by the RippleX team in June, will enable developers to create new decentralized applications (dApps) that combine the best features of XRPL and EVM.
Community Reaction and Future
While commenting on the announcement, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said that the foundations of crypto infrastructure serving real-world use cases are steadily becoming more robust by the day. Earlier this year, the XRP Ledger also added new Automated Market Maker (AMM) functionality.
With new features and a commitment to improvement, Ripple continues to develop XRP Ledger, providing new opportunities for developers and users.
